A treadmill is an exercise device that is used for running & walking whilst remaining in one place. These are usually on a rotating belt which is driven by a motor which can be adjusted to suit the speed of the person exercising. Coupled with this treadmills can usually be adjusted in height also to emulate walking or running up hill.

Treadmill training has many advantages & disadvantages. These are all dependant on who is using the treadmill. Below is a brief list of both.

Advantages

  • Provides a stable platform for endurance running.
  • Reduced impact on the bones in the leg as treamills offer increased shock absorbtion over running outdooors.
  • Can be used in all weather conditions as they are housed indoors.
  • Provides accurate information as to the calorie consumption during the workout.

Disadvantages

  • Many users find treadmills tedious and boring, this can be overcome with the addition of television / music found in most gyms.
  • Can cause injury if not used properly.
  • Cost of electricity if used at home.
